National law firm Holding Redlich is proud to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of its Sydney office in 1994.
The Sydney office was the first interstate office opened by the firm which was originally established in Melbourne in the 1960s, with Brisbane and Cairns offices added in subsequent years.
Now and then
While today it occupies the top three floors of the MLC Centre, the Sydney office had a very humble beginning, occupying a tiny office in a building on Castlereagh Street.
Now with more than 120 Sydney employees, staffing originally comprised partner Ian Robertson – now Holding Redlich’s National Managing Partner – plus two lawyers and two secretaries.
“While these days we cover all major corporate and commercial practice areas, with specialist partners in each area, for the first two years I had to handle everything from contracts to disputes for some very large clients. Somehow we managed and the office was profitable in its first year of operation,” Ian notes.
The Sydney office
Sydney Managing Partner Stephen Trew, who joined the Sydney office as a lawyer 20 years ago, said he is very pleased to see the office reach this milestone.
“Sydney is a unique market in many ways, and we have always been on the front foot in responding to changing trends and client needs as that market evolves,” Stephen said.
“We have seen our office change significantly over that time, growing strongly and very importantly, growing with the help of a strong team of very talented and wonderful employees.”
“A true force in our city”
Close friend of the firm, David Gonski, has shared the following thoughts about the 25 year milestone for Holding Redlich’s Sydney office: “I still remember the late Peter Redlich ringing me to tell me the firm was going to open in Sydney and also I remember attending the party which commemorated its opening here.
“The firm has in the last 25 years been extremely successful in Sydney and I congratulate Ian Robertson and all his colleagues on well and truly achieving Peter Redlich’s Sydney dream and in so doing becoming a true force in our city. May the next 25 years be as successful for your firm as the last.”
